IILC FORMS PARTNERSHIP WITH ACCU, JAPAN

The Permanent secretary for iTaukei Affairs, Meli Bainimarama signed an agreement in September 2008 with the Asia Pacific Cultural Center for UNESCO (ACCU) based in Japan to enhance the promotion of iTaukei Intangible cultural heritage.

With this agreement, the iTaukei Institute of Language and Culture will serve as a national correspondent for Fiji, updating the rest of the Asia Pacific Countries through ACCU of the highlights of its activities every year particularly in the field of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

An international conference on safeguarding of Intangible cultural heritage was held in Seoul, Korea on the 3rd to the 4th of November 2009. The theme of the conference was information and networking. Mr Simione Sevudredre, a new senior officer at the institute attended this conference. Click on report to view the presentation. It sums up the work Fiji currently is engaged in as far as the 2003 UNESCO Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage is concerned.

In addition to these, the Senior Admin Officer, Mr Sekove Bigitibau of the iTaukei Institute of Language and Culture, was also invited by WIPO to attend a seminar on Intellectual Property and Traditional Knowledge (TK), Genetic Resources (GR), and Traditional Cultural Expressions, as a speaker. The seminar was held in Thailand from the 16th to the 19th of December 2009. Click report to view the available report.
